Looking for an honorary bridesmaid definition and explanation? Weddings indeed can have many terms and many roles. Maid of honor, bridesmaid, flower girl, the matron of honor – they are not just there for show, they also have obligations, duties and responsibilities to fulfill.
But what about honorary bridesmaids? What is an honorary bridesmaid in the first place? And what are the duties of an honorary bridesmaid?
Honorary Bridesmaid Meaning
Before trying to appoint someone to be your honorary bridesmaid, it is important to have the honorary bridesmaid meaning explained and to know what the position is and why you have someone with this title. Indeed, there are people who have helped you a lot with your wedding preparations but are not part of the wedding entourage, thus you can acknowledge a special person by making them your honorary bridesmaid. If you have a younger sister that you want to be your bridesmaid but could not attend your wedding, then you can pick her as your honorary bridesmaid.
If you have a friend who is not officially your bridesmaid but has been helping you all throughout the wedding, you may also consider her as your honorary bridesmaid. An honorary bridesmaid is not someone like the maid of honor, who sits right near the bride and assists her. She may be a close friend, a sister or even an aunt who has been there for you, assisting you in every preparation you have and the title of honorary bridesmaid is given to acknowledge her efforts in helping you on your big day.
Duties and Responsibilities of the Honorary Bridesmaid
One thing to remember is that the honorary bridesmaid title is not something official and not part of the usual wedding entourage, thus her obligation, duties and responsibilities are not well-defined. In fact, someone who is given the name ‘honorary bridesmaid’ is not actually obliged to do anything. The bride may have chosen to give you such a title because you have been helping her with the preparations – even though you are not part of the official bridesmaid lineup. Although, the bride may ask you a favor during the wedding day and of course, depending on your relationship, you might also have to support and offer your help as well. Doing something special for the bride can be enough to receive the title of honorary bridesmaid.

Honorary Bridesmaid for Your Sister or Special Friend
I recently had a chance to have the title of honorary bridesmaid explained to me. A friend of mine recently got married and she told me how she gave the honorary bridesmaid title to her sister who was not able to attend her wedding because of another previous important commitment. If you have someone in mind as a bridesmaid but she cannot attend the wedding, you can also give her the title of honorary bridesmaid. Of course, that can also be a cousin, an aunt or a childhood friend that has a special place in your heart. She may be able to attend your wedding or not.
In fact, the title was originally created because the bride could not accommodate all her friends to be a part of the wedding entourage, thus honorary bridesmaids are made. Of course, they are often obligation-free and all they usually need to do is attend the wedding.
